Sapphire Fossicking

‘Fossicking’, or you may know it better as ‘prospecting’, is an inexpensive, healthy and surprisingly fun family activity. Just 20 kilometers from Inverell are two places where you can roll up your sleeves with family or friends and have a play in the dirt for the afternoon.

Billabong Blue Fossicking Park and 7 Oaks Fossicking are located on Swan Brook and the Frazer Creek respectively. It’s these creek beds that produce the ‘wash’, the sapphire rich source material for your fossicking. After a short hands-on demonstration from one of their helpful staff, get your shovel, sieve and bucket and start looking for that lucky strike of translucent blue sapphire.

There is a stockpile of material conveniently set up by the washing tubs if you want to get right into it. Those who are a bit more adventurous can explore the natural creek banks nearby, just like old-time prospectors. Either way, adults and kids of all ages alike can’t help but enjoy being outside and getting their hands dirty.

Be sure to bring your lunch and find a shady spot for a well-earned break. Both locations are equipped with everything you need including drinking water, toilets, BBQ area and all the necessary fossicking gear.
